Historical and cultural context

As someone with a deep appreciation for history, I find it fascinating to explore how different cultures and spiritual traditions have viewed gender throughout the ages. It's interesting to note that many indigenous cultures, for instance, have recognized gender as a fluid and multifaceted concept, with a wide range of expressions and roles.

Perhaps one of the most intriguing examples of this is the legendary civilization of Atlantis. According to ancient texts and stories, the Atlanteans viewed gender in a much different way than many modern societies do today. According to ancient texts and legends, Atlantis was a highly advanced civilization that was deeply connected to the spiritual realm. One of the key aspects of their culture was their understanding of gender as a fluid and ever-changing concept. In Atlantis, individuals were not limited by societal norms or expectations based on their biological sex, but were free to express themselves in whatever way felt authentic and natural to them.

In terms of gender, there is evidence to suggest that the Atlanteans had a very different understanding of gender roles than many societies today. It is said that they recognized gender as a fluid and multifaceted concept with a wide range of expressions and roles. Individuals were free to express themselves in a manner that felt true to themselves, rather than being limited by societal norms or biological sex.

Some accounts even suggest that the Atlanteans recognized the existence of a third gender, which they referred to as "Androgynous" or "Hermaphroditic." These individuals were considered to be highly spiritual and were said to possess a unique balance of masculine and feminine energies.

Ther are various accounts of the third gender in Atlantean mythology and literature. One of the most notable examples is the Greek philosopher Plato's account of Atlantis in his dialogues "Timaeus" and "Critias."

In Plato's account, the Atlanteans were a highly advanced civilization that had achieved a state of perfect balance and harmony between masculine and feminine energies. He describes the existence of a third gender that was considered to be the most spiritually advanced of all, possessing a unique combination of masculine and feminine energies that allowed them to access higher realms of consciousness.

There are also accounts in other mythological and spiritual traditions of a third gender or gender variant individuals.

Egyptian history

Similarly, the ancient Egyptians also recognized the fluidity of gender and embraced a multi-faceted understanding of masculinity and femininity. The god Horus, for example, was often depicted as having both masculine and feminine qualities, and many Egyptian pharaohs were known to cross-dress and engage in same-sex relationships.

Egyptian art and literature provide some of the most significant evidence of the fluidity of gender and the acceptance of diverse expressions of masculinity and femininity in ancient Egyptian society. One of the most notable examples of this can be seen in the depictions of the god Horus, who was often portrayed as having both masculine and feminine attributes. In some representations, Horus is shown with a falcon's head, which was considered a symbol of masculinity, while at other times he is depicted with a solar disk and cow's horns, which were considered symbols of femininity.

Moreover, some of the most famous and powerful rulers in ancient Egyptian history, including Hatshepsut and Akhenaten, embraced androgynous expressions of gender. Hatshepsut, who ruled as pharaoh for over 20 years in the 15th century BCE, is often depicted in statues and reliefs wearing male clothing and the false beard that was traditionally worn by pharaohs. Akhenaten, who ruled during the 14th century BCE, is also known for his androgynous appearance, which was emphasized in his depictions in art and sculpture.

In addition to artistic representations, there is also some evidence from archaeological findings that suggests that same-sex relationships were accepted in ancient Egyptian society. For example, there are inscriptions on some tombs and monuments that depict same-sex couples in intimate positions, such as embracing and kissing.

Furthermore, there is evidence to suggest that ancient Egyptian society was organized around a complex system of gender and sexual roles, with individuals occupying different positions and roles based on their gender and sexual identity. The Book of the Dead, for example, describes a number of different sexual roles and practices, including the practice of male-male anal intercourse, which was considered to be a sacred and transformative act.

Overall, the evidence from ancient Egyptian art, literature, and archaeology suggests that ancient Egyptian society recognized and celebrated the fluidity of gender and embraced a multi-faceted understanding of masculinity and femininity. The androgynous expressions of gender seen in depictions of gods and pharaohs, as well as the acceptance of same-sex relationships and the complex system of gender and sexual roles, all point to a society that valued diversity and embraced a wide range of expressions of gender and sexuality.

Meanwhile, the indigenous Zapotec people of Oaxaca, Mexico, embraced a four-gender system that honored and respected individuals who did not conform to binary gender norms. The Zapotec people of Oaxaca, Mexico, have recognized four genders for centuries, including male, female, muxe (biological males who adopt feminine roles), and muxhegunaa (biological females who adopt masculine roles).

In Zapotec culture, muxes are respected and honored members of the community, often serving as healers, spiritual leaders, and performers. Anthropologists have noted that muxes often hold prominent roles in Zapotec society, and many are seen as natural-born leaders with special spiritual gifts. In fact, some Zapotecs believe that muxes possess unique spiritual powers, and they are often sought out for their expertise in traditional medicine and healing practices.

Archaeological evidence suggests that the Zapotec culture has recognized the existence of muxes for centuries. For example, the Zapotec ruins of Mitla contain a mosaic of jaguars, which were traditionally associated with muxes. Additionally, Spanish colonial records describe the role of muxes in Zapotec society and detail how they were recognized and honored by their fellow community members.

The Zapotec culture's recognition of muxes offers an alternative view of gender that challenges the rigid gender binaries that are common in Western societies. Instead of forcing individuals into predefined gender roles based on their biological sex, the Zapotec culture recognizes the fluidity of gender and embraces individuals who express their gender in non-traditional ways. This acceptance and celebration of gender diversity has contributed to the vibrant and thriving Zapotec culture that exists today.

In Juchitán de Zaragoza, a small town on the Istmo de Tehuantepec in the state of Oaxaca, there remains a large population of Muxes who have been celebrated since pre-colonization times. The wider acceptance of a third gender among the community may be traced to the belief that individuals who identify as Muxes are part of the culture and its traditions, not separate from it. The Isthmus of Tehuantepec is famous for its Tehuana traje, or traditional dress, which has beautiful floral embroidery. This garment was influenced by the silk embroidery from China and Southeast Asia, which was not seen in other parts of the Americas. The women of Tehuantepec then created their own embroidered garments, which became popular and traded throughout the region. The financial independence of the women in this matriarchal society and the relative equality of genders in the region contribute to the widespread acceptance of Muxes, who are honored and respected members of the community.

This information from the Natural History Museum offers a deeper insight into the vibrant culture of the Zapotec people and their acceptance of gender expansive identities. It shows how the traditional dress of the region was influenced by silk embroidery from distant lands and how this inspired the creation of their own embroidered garments. The matriarchal society of independent women in the region, who were the main source of income for their families, also contributed to the widespread acceptance of Muxes as valuable members of the community. This is a wonderful example of how a culture can embrace diversity and inclusivity, and how it enriches the community as a whole.

Dynamics

As we explore the acceptance and celebration of gender expansive identities across cultures and time periods, it's important to also consider the interplay of masculine and feminine energies. The Universal Law of Gender acknowledges the significance of both energies, recognizing that they are not limited to any particular gender or sex, but can be expressed in a variety of ways. Balancing these energies is crucial for optimal well-being and success in all areas of life.

Furthermore, gender dynamics can have a significant impact on our relationships, whether we are aware of it or not. By understanding and respecting the masculine and feminine energies within ourselves and others, we can create healthier and more fulfilling connections with those around us.

In recent years, there have been several controversies surrounding gender dynamics in some spiritual communities. One example is the Bethel Megachurch controversy, where women were not allowed to lead, and their roles were limited to homemaking and child-rearing. Another is the Hillsong controversy, where male leaders have been accused of exploiting their power to sexually harass and abuse women.

Such negative aspects of gender dynamics can have a significant impact on the way we do politics. When spiritual practices become corrupted, it can lead to corrupt politics, where power and privilege are concentrated in the hands of a few individuals who use it to oppress others. This creates a culture of fear and mistrust, which in turn hampers progress and prevents us from building a better world.

The Universal Law of Gender can help us bring balance to our spiritual practices and our politics. By recognizing and respecting the masculine and feminine energies within ourselves and others, we can create healthier and more fulfilling connections with others. This can help us avoid conflicts and misunderstandings and build more harmonious relationships. As politics concerns how the many live amongst each other, balancing these energies can help us shift our paradigms and bring about positive change.

Sociologically and from a family psychology perspective, there has been a shift in social norms in recent years. More fathers are staying at home to take care of the children, while mothers are going to work. This larger acceptance of fathers taking on domestic responsibilities and being more nurturing aligns with the feminine energy, while the mother going to work aligns with masculine energy. This shift in social norms is an example of how we can cultivate a balanced approach to gender dynamics, allowing for a more holistic and inclusive society.

As we work towards balancing these energies, it's also important to be in line with our passions and purposes. Working to the grindstone, regardless of who goes to work, can lead to a depleted soul. We must cultivate a balanced approach that allows us to be in alignment with our deepest desires and values, while also respecting the energies of those around us.

Toxicity let’s talk about it

Man trying to open jar of pickles with excessive force

However, in some cases, toxic masculinity can interfere with our ability to pursue our passions and purpose. Toxic masculinity can manifest in various ways, such as rigid gender roles, objectification of women, and aggression towards those who challenge traditional norms.

Toxic masculinity is a term used to describe a set of societal norms and behaviors that promote aggression, dominance, and emotional repression in men. However, it's important to note that toxic masculinity is not limited to those who identify as male and can also be exhibited by individuals of any gender. This toxic spirit is often perpetuated by those who benefit from the status quo and power dynamics, regardless of gender identity.

At its core, toxic masculinity is driven by an unhealthy ego and a need to dominate others.

Marjorie Taylor Greene doing at State of the Union address in white coat

In the case of Marjorie Taylor Greene, a US Representative from Georgia, her behavior has been criticized as exhibiting toxic masculinity.

Greene has been known for making inflammatory comments and engaging in confrontational behavior. She has made controversial statements about race, religion, and political violence. In one instance, she referred to the January 6th insurrection at the US Capitol as a "1776 moment." She has also been known to bully and harass her colleagues, such as when she yelled at and chased after Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on the steps of the Capitol.

This kind of behavior can be seen as an example of toxic masculinity, as it involves an attempt to assert dominance and control over others. It can create a hostile and confrontational environment, which is not conducive to healthy relationships or productive discourse.

As a counter to the example of Marjorie Taylor Greene, we can look at a male figure such as former US President Barack Obama. While he exhibited strong leadership qualities, he also emphasized the importance of empathy, collaboration, and emotional intelligence.

He often spoke about the need to listen to and respect differing viewpoints, and he was known for his ability to bring people together to find common ground. This kind of leadership approach can be seen as a positive example of balancing masculine and feminine energies, and it can lead to greater harmony and success in all areas of life.

President Obama, meeting with foreign leader, shaking hands

During his presidency, President Obama worked towards dismantling traditional gender roles and stereotypes through policy initiatives and public statements. One example of this is the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which was the first bill he signed into law. This act expanded the rights of workers to sue for pay discrimination and was an important step towards addressing the gender wage gap.

Additionally, Obama frequently spoke out about the importance of supporting women and girls and challenging harmful gender norms. He launched the White House Council on Women and Girls, which aimed to ensure that all government agencies considered the needs of women and girls in their policies and programs.

He also spoke about the importance of fathers taking an active role in parenting and supported policies such as paid parental leave and affordable childcare, recognizing that these issues affect both men and women.

By cultivating a healthy sense of self and balancing our masculine and feminine energies, we can experience more self-growth and a decline in toxic behaviors. This involves recognizing the ways in which we have been socialized to uphold gender norms and expectations, and actively working to challenge and change them.

Get Expansive

The Universal Law of Gender recognizes that gender is not limited to a binary concept of male or female, but rather encompasses a spectrum of gender identities and expressions. As such, it encourages the use of gender-expansive terms and language that honor and respect the diversity of gender identities.

By embracing gender-expansive terms and language, we can create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all individuals, regardless of their gender identity or expression. This can help to reduce gender-based discrimination and bias, and promote greater understanding and acceptance of diverse gender identities.

For example, instead of using binary terms like "he" or "she," gender-expansive language may include terms like "they," "ze," or "hir." Similarly, instead of referring to individuals as "boys" or "girls," we can use more gender-inclusive terms like "children" or "youth."

The Universal Law of Gender invites us to explore and honor the full range of gender expressions and identities, and to create a more equitable and inclusive society for all.

While gender has traditionally been viewed as a binary system of male and female, many cultures around the world have long recognized the existence of third or multiple genders, as well as the fluidity of gender identity.

In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the need for gender-expansive language, which acknowledges and affirms gender diversity and allows for greater inclusivity. This includes using gender-neutral pronouns such as "they/them" instead of "he/him" or "she/her," as well as terms such as "non-binary" and "genderqueer" to describe individuals who identify outside of the traditional binary.

The Universal Law of Gender recognizes that masculine and feminine energies are not limited to any particular gender or sex, and can be expressed in a variety of ways. By embracing gender-expansive language and acknowledging the full spectrum of gender identity, we can create a more inclusive and equitable society that honors and celebrates diversity.

Gender, expansive flags

Anthropologists also recognize that gender is deeply intertwined with power dynamics, and that traditional gender roles and norms often reflect and reinforce systems of inequality and oppression. By challenging these norms and embracing a more expansive understanding of gender, we can work towards creating a more just and equitable world.

Push Back & Criticism

As social norms continue to evolve and shift towards greater acceptance of diverse gender roles and identities, we can embrace a more expansive and inclusive understanding of gender. This means acknowledging the unique qualities of both masculine and feminine energies within ourselves and others, regardless of gender identity. It also means recognizing that the balance of these energies is essential for personal growth and fulfillment, as well as healthy relationships and societies.

Critics such as Joe Rogan and Piers Morgan tend to push back against the dismantling of social norms and gender roles by advocating for traditional gender roles and emphasizing biological differences between men and women. They argue that there are inherent differences between the sexes that determine their abilities, preferences, and roles in society. They view attempts to move away from traditional gender roles and norms as a threat to traditional family values and a disregard for the natural order of things.

In particular, they criticize movements such as feminism and LGBTQ+ rights for challenging traditional gender roles and norms. They often suggest that these movements are seeking to erase biological differences between men and women and promote a kind of genderless society that is unnatural and goes against basic human instincts.

Critics like Joe Rogan and Piers Morgan also tend to see the dismantling of social norms and gender roles as a threat to their own identity and status as men. They feel that traditional masculinity is being attacked and that they are being forced to change their behavior and conform to a new set of norms that they do not agree with.

The pushback against dismantling social norms and gender roles can be seen as a reflection of a larger societal struggle between those who seek to maintain the status quo and those who advocate for change. In the case of Joe Rogan and Piers Morgan, their resistance to the dismantling of gender roles can be seen as a manifestation of a broader conservative ideology that seeks to maintain traditional social and cultural values.

This ideology is often shared by dogmatic religious institutions and ultra-conservative religious leaders, who often hold significant influence over their followers. These institutions and leaders may use religious teachings and traditions to reinforce gender roles and maintain social norms, which can contribute to a resistant attitude towards change.

This resistance can also be seen in politics, where there may be conflicts of interest between political parties or even court members. Political parties and their leaders may hold entrenched beliefs about gender roles and social norms, and may resist efforts to change these norms in order to maintain their power and influence.

Jerry Falwell Senior was a prominent American evangelical pastor and political activist. He was the founder of the Moral Majority, a conservative Christian political advocacy group that played a significant role in the rise of the Christian right in the United States. In 1980, Falwell Senior said, "I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way - all of them who have tried to secularize America - I point the finger in their face and say: you helped this happen."

Jerry Fallwell jr, white man staring at camera with shocked guilty face

This comment is dangerous because it perpetuates an "us versus them" mentality and demonizes groups of people who hold different beliefs or identities. It promotes the idea that certain individuals or groups are not deserving of equal rights or opportunities, and can lead to discrimination and violence. Moreover, Falwell Senior's influence on politicians and political discourse highlights the danger of religious zealot leaders having direct influence over political decisions.

The issue of dismantling Roe v. Wade is a prime example of this danger. Many conservative Christian leaders and politicians had been pushing for the reversal of Roe v. Wade for decade, and finally broke through the landmark Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in the United States and put millions of people at health risk to varying degrees. Their beliefs and values are heavily influenced by their legalistic and dogmatic religious beliefs, and they often prioritize their religious convictions over the rights and well-being of individuals who need access to health services such as abortion.

In the past, religious institutions have also upheld and promoted harmful views and practices, such as the belief that interracial marriage was immoral or that women were the property of men. These views were used to justify discrimination and violence against marginalized groups. Similarly, the push to dismantle reproductive rights is often based on patriarchal and conservative religious views that prioritize control over women's bodies and reproductive choices.

The correlation between the pushback against dismantling social norms and gender roles and the influence of religious leaders and politics highlights the danger of conflating religious beliefs with political decision-making. When religious leaders have direct influence over political decisions, there is a risk of prioritizing religious values over the rights and well-being of all individuals in a society. It is important to recognize and challenge the harmful and discriminatory beliefs and practices that are perpetuated by these institutions and their leaders, and to promote inclusive and equitable social norms and policies.

Overall, their pushback against dismantling social norms and gender roles is based on a belief that traditional gender roles are natural, biologically determined, and necessary for a well-functioning society. They see attempts to move away from these roles as a threat to social stability and a regression towards a kind of social experimentation that goes against human nature.

In conclusion, toxic masculinity is a destructive force that harms individuals and society as a whole. It is unbalanced masculinity that values domination, control, and aggression over cooperation, empathy, and emotional expression. However, the good news is that we can work towards balancing our energies and cultivating healthy expressions of our masculine and feminine traits. This requires self-reflection, personal growth, and a willingness to challenge the societal norms that uphold toxic masculinity. By doing so, we can create a more compassionate and equitable world that allows all individuals to thrive. Remember, as we navigate this process, it's important to approach ourselves and others with love and gentleness, recognizing that there is a soul at play here. Let's work together to help each other evolve as graciously as possible.

"When we embrace the balance of our masculine and feminine energies, and lead with love and gentleness, we not only evolve our own soul, but also help others to evolve gracefully along with us."
